BENTLEY Arthur Herbert

Born on 3rd February 1886 at Caterbury (NSW), a suburb of Sydney.
He was the 6th of 8 children to George & Matilda Bentley (nee War).
Sadly, Matilda died in 1892 during childbirth of their youngest child, when Arthur was only 6 years old.
After the death of his mother, Arthur left school at a very young age to help his father work in his market garden in the Marrickville/Canterbury area. Before the 1st World War, he worked as a labourer for Campbelltown Council, at the same time as working with his father on their farm. He was not married at the time.
Enlisted on 21.2.1916 at the age of 30 years, and embarked from Sydney on 22.5.1916 on board HMAS WARILDA. He served in various battles: Poziéres, Bullecourt, Messines, Polygon Wood, Passchendaele, Ancre, Hamel, Amiens, Albert, Hindenburg Line & Epéhy.
He returned to Australia on board the “Beltana” on 19.7.1919 and was discharged on 4th September 1919. Arthur and Katherine Leonard were married in 1926 and had 9 children.
He died of a heart attack on 8th December 1946 at only 60 years of age. He is buried in St Peter’s church cemetery in Campbelltown (NSW).
