By a twist of fate, the Bullecourt Cross memorial will forever remain linked to Private Alfred W. King.
A few days after he was killed in action, the chaplain of the 57th Battalion made a promise to Private King's mother: "Also stay well assured that his memory will always be revered by the French people and his resting place cared for and respected by those whom he died to save".
Yet, more than sixty years later, there was no trace of that improvised grave. Alfred King's name was simply written on the Villers-Bretonneux memorial, in the Somme. When the idea to erect a cross emerged, his sister Gladys Stafford was the first to support the project, even financially. She notably asked for a plaque mentioning her brother's name to be affixed to the monument at the unveiling. Her wish was granted. But Alfred King's posthumous fate did not stop there.
A few years later, in August 1999, an Australian historian did a search on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website after it was updated. Quite unexpectedly, he found the place where Alfred King was buried. His body was found again in 1949 together with five other Australian soldiers, on the other side of the road, about 30 meters from today's cross memorial. The remains were reburied in Longueval but this situation were not mentionned untill the 1990's.

At Louverval,France on 15th April1917, Lieut. POPE was in charge of the centre picquet post of the right sector held by the 11th Battalion..The stronght of his picquet was one officer,3NCO’s and 30 men. Lieut.POPE had been ordered to hold this post at all costs, as it was an important one. The post was heavily attacked on the morning of the 15th April, when a German attack was made on the line held by the 1st Australian division. The Germans ,in greatly superior numbers, surrounded the post, and Lieut POPE found himself running short of ammunition. He sent back for this, but before it could arrive He made a gallant and determined attack upon the enemy with the bayonet. His Party was seen to fix bayonets and charge into a superior force of the enemy, by whom it was overpowered.* Lieut. POPE by his sacrifice , not only inflicted heavy loss on the enemy, but held the position as ordered t, to the last. Lieut.POPE’s body was found, with those of most of his men, and eighty dead Germans around The post were evidence of the gallant resistance he had made. Jack White was 29 years old when the second battle of Bullecourt started on May 3. Before he enrolled, he was a modest blacksmith in the small town of Briagolong, in the state of Victoria. He was married and had two children. He belonged to the 22nd Battalion, one of the few which managed to break through the Hindenburg Line on May 3. Together with his company, he seized a portion of trench close to where the Digger memorial now stands. It seems that he was killed by a bullet right when he was launching an attack with his men. He must have fallen backwards in the trench and been buried by bombs. The medical team never managed to retrieve his body.
In November 1994, Sergeant Jack White's body was discovered. His identity disc was largely intact. His wallet, with a fragment of letter to his wife, a lock of her hair and his brass “AUSTRALIA” shoulder badge were also found. His daughter Myrle Prophet was only a ten-month-old baby when her father went off to war. She made the only overseas flight in her life from Launceston, Tasmania to Paris in October, 1995 to attend the official reburial of her father in the military cemetery of Quéant, 78 years after he died.

Born on 3rd February 1886 at Caterbury (NSW), a suburb of Sydney.
He was the 6th of 8 children to George & Matilda Bentley (nee War).
Sadly, Matilda died in 1892 during childbirth of their youngest child, when Arthur was only 6 years old.
After the death of his mother, Arthur left school at a very young age to help his father work in his market garden in the Marrickville/Canterbury area. Before the 1st World War, he worked as a labourer for Campbelltown Council, at the same time as working with his father on their farm. He was not married at the time.
Enlisted on 21.2.1916 at the age of 30 years, and embarked from Sydney on 22.5.1916 on board HMAS WARILDA. He served in various battles: Poziéres, Bullecourt, Messines, Polygon Wood, Passchendaele, Ancre, Hamel, Amiens, Albert, Hindenburg Line & Epéhy.
He returned to Australia on board the “Beltana” on 19.7.1919 and was discharged on 4th September 1919. Arthur and Katherine Leonard were married in 1926 and had 9 children.
He died of a heart attack on 8th December 1946 at only 60 years of age. He is buried in St Peter’s church cemetery in Campbelltown (NSW).

According to information received, Edmund baragry was killed by a shell exploding in the trench. Although many statements of others in D Company identified a grave site, no remains have ever been recovered of Edmund Baragry and others killed with him on 9 May,1917. He and many of his companions with no dedicated graves are remembered on the walls at Villers-Bretonneux.
